There are some music apps that you want in your collection because they do something amazing, whether that’s making noise, processing noise or recording noise. These apps are the wizz-bang highlights of your music making workflow. But not all apps have to be like this to earn a place on your mobile device. In short, an app can be useful without being a superstar.
Groove! Metronome by Tom Reinert is just such an app. What you get here is a classic mobile app – a piece of software that does one job and one job only – and in Groove! Metronome’s case, that one job is (surprise, surprise!) as a metronome.
Designed primarily for the iPhone (but scaling up perfectly well on the iPad), Groove! Metronome does it’s job with a minimum of fuss but a maximum of class. The single screen interface is elegantly presented, with tempo being set either by the +/- buttons or the large, and very smooth, jog wheel. This clicks in a very satisfying fashion as it rotates. Tempos can be set in whole numbers only – no decimal places like you get in your desktop DAW.
Unlike some metronome tools where you can only set the tempo, Groove! Metronome also allows you to set the time signature. In addition, you can choose to accent the first click in the bar to emphasise that time signature – very useful.
One would expect a metronome app to keep good time (it’s pretty pointless if it doesn’t) but cross-checking Groove! Metronome against some other digital metronomes suggested it was rock solid. The click itself is clear and positive.
A metronome is not, perhaps, the most exciting tool in the musician’s toolkit but, whether you need it to set your band’s tempo or whether you use it to practice your instrument drills against, every musician ought to own one. Groove! Metronome does it’s job without any fuss and, at £0.69 (or the equivalent $/€ price), won’t break the bank. So, if you want to have a top-notch metronome available to you in an instant (assuming you have your iPhone with you), then get your Groove! Metronome on….
